Tips For Picking The Right Place To Start Your Business Before you move into a new area you look into it. You check out your potential homes, to find the one that suits you and your family best. You look at your neighbors, and if you have children, you look into the local school system. You want a place that makes you and your family happy, and lets you all feel comfortable. You should put as much work into picking the right place for your business, from the right office to the right area. You want to make sure whatever your business model, you are in a place that works for your business and help it grow. Here are some things to consider. The Competition First, look at the competition you’ll have for your business in the location you’re considering. If you are opening a hair salon and the town already has three of them, what are you offering that will pull the competitions clients to your business? Or, are you better off setting up shop in the next town that doesn’t have a salon, so people don’t have to drive so far for hair styles? Know your business, and the competition when it comes to the work you do. Maybe having a fourth salon in one town will be OK. The size of the town or city could be a huge determining factor. The Consumers You also want to know what the consumers are into in the town you are considering. If you want to open a new age style shop, you’re probably not going to get a lot of business in a town that is full of churches. Study the consumers in the area you are considering moving into with your business. You could do a poll of some kind using social media. It’s a great way to get to know people anywhere, and find out what interests consumers in any given area. The Space Consider the space you will need for your business as well. Maybe your business is something small that you can run out of your own home, or maybe you need a huge warehouse to hold all of your stock. These can be important factors for where you set up shop as well, as one town may not have exactly what you’re looking for, while another may have the perfect building. It’s helpful to know what you need in a business space before you start looking. Make a checklist, or a wish list, that you can look back at each time you tour a potential office space or warehouse. Starting your own business can be a great adventure, but where you start it may have a lot to do with whether or not your business actually becomes a success. Girl Gets Date Meet Real Career Girl Camille Virginia If ever there was a woman making her dreams come true, it’s Camille Virginia.   Now, I have to start by letting you know how Camille and I first met. We were at a sorority brunch in Chicago. Camille, new to the area, and I, a lifelong resident, were seated next to each other. We began with basic small talk, which quickly turned into a game of twenty questions as I pried her for information about which small town outside Portland, Oregon she was from. Turns out, not only is she from the town where my aunt and uncle lived for many years, Camille went to high school with my cousin and remembered what kind of car her drove (a blue Volvo station wagon that he STILL drives and boasts over 350,000 miles!). Needless to say, that moment was the start of a wonderful friendship. And I am taking this moment to share my wonderful, exciting, and talented friend with all of you. AMT: How do you see your workshop growing from here? CV: I actually just published two new classes. The first is on flirting: Master Your Own Flirting Style. We’re going to do role playing and talk about different flirting profiles so women can find what feels authentic to them. The second, well, there’s an episode of Sex and the City where Carrie is giving a talk and isn’t being really articulate about how she meets these men. So, [I’m taking the workshop out of classroom and] that’s what I’m doing, but with street festivals. I’m taking these women out in the field to meet men at street festivals. AMT: What advice would you give to women interested in starting a side hustle? CV: You have to be passionate about it because it’s a lot of work. When you get home from your day job, you have all these other things to do for your side hustle. You have to be willing to work nights and weekends on it. If you’re not passionate about it, you’re going to quit. But, if you love it, like I do, you’ll pour months and months of hard work into it without hesitation. Make it not about yourself, too. There can be hard times and frustrating times. I’ve had a few people who are like, That’s just a dumb idea or That’s stupid. If you’re not confident about [your idea] you’ll let that get to you. There are always going to be people who are threatened by other people’s success. Looking past that will help you keep going. AMT: I can’t end this conversation without asking for your best piece of dating advice! CV: Turn off work mode and just be kind. When people get nervous they can be mean because they get vulnerable. That is the biggest turn off to any human being, not just men. Lead with a soft, feminine energy, and be kind to your date.

How to Let Go of Line Level Tasks - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Let’s pretend you just started a new job at a large marketing firm as a head of customer service. The first week, the CEO sits next to you every day. For 8 hours, you listen to her rattle on and on about how to answer phones “the right way.” On day one, you’re polite. You reassure yourself, “She must do this to everyone. It’s like some form of initiation, right?” But, a few more days go by, and now you’re irritated. You feel insulted. Can’t she just let you do your job? Unfortunately, this situation is quite common, especially in a corporate atmosphere. Should the CEO hover over the customer service team? No way. In an ideal world, theres little communication between these two parties. There’s an expectation set. Both then work together like a well oiled machine to meet internal  goals. The CEO shouldn’t be following around the CSR like white on rice. It’s annoying and unproductive. Nothing good can come of management having too much of a hand in line level tasks. On the surface, it discourages employees. It’s a true example of poor leadership. But, underneath all the irritation, it takes management away from their own daily duties. Wait, you mean to say management’s job isn’t to just  manage employees? Nope. That’s only the tip of the iceberg. If you’re starting to observe these poor habits in your leadership tendencies, keep scanning. Focus on letting go of line level tasks with these step by step instructions. First, lead by example. You must first know how to walk the talk. Learn how to do the task yourself. As a matter of fact, master it. Show a new CSR how to own the phone. But, approach it with a “first times the charm” mentality. Don’t torture them with 30 calls. There is such a thing as learning on the job, and it actually proves to be effective. This will then help you set a standard for expected results. When showing employees how it’s done, the proof will be in your actions. Instead of throwing new hires a 20 page document about “how to answer phones,” just show them. Your actions will set an expectation for phone time moving forward. Remember, people need structure. Don’t just drift off into magical management land, never to be heard from again. Schedule regular check ins. Depending on your industry, once a week stand ups might apply. If you work in more of a hands off environment, shoot for once a month. No matter what, stay focused at these check ins. Avoid special treatment. This is about you holding people accountable. The best workplaces avoid the “he said, she said” (or sometimes he did, she did) conundrum. They handle problems in a one on one environment. Incentives work. Incentives make people want to do more. Like it or not, they can take your organization from good to great. If people don’t get an extra reward, they’ll just do bare minimum. That might be ok if you’re just trying to “get by, but is that what you really want? Inspire employees with an above average reward system. Let people be themselves. Everyone works differently. Respect that. Some people like to crank out their to dos in the first hour. Others might spend the first half of the day simply getting organized. Respect different work environments. Maybe Susan from web development functions best in a cluttered atmosphere. If that’s how she remains the most productive, let her be. Don’t force your work habits on others, as this will actually damage morale. Leadership isnt always easy, but guess what? It can be learned. If you want to be a manager that earns respect, boosts revenue, and heightens morals, focus on empowering people to be their best. Let go of line level tasks, and focus on big picture management.

For some, this can be a positive experience, but for others, it can be very negative. A big part of living away is all about learning to live with others, but sometimes the downsides of this can be very depressing and overwhelming, so for some people, choosing to live alone may be the best decision. When I was living away at university, I wanted to live on my own but I could never afford it. But had this option been accessible to me, I definitely would have benefited from it because I really struggled with living with others and I really can’t stand filth, noise and toxic housemates. If you want your own space and you don’t feel lonely easily, then living on your own as a student is a certainly a good option if you can afford it. If its too expensive to live by yourself, then here are some tips on how to cope with living in a negative space and some more advice on what types of flatmates to expect.   So here are some things to bear in mind if you’re trying to figure out whether or not flying solo is an option for you. You won’t have to deal with other people’s mess There’s nothing worse than a filthy flatmate, and coming home to a dirty home is unpleasant and enough to put anyone in a bad mood. Living on your own means that you don’t have to deal with other people’s mess. You can keep your place tidy, go out and feel assured that your place will be as tidy as you left it and that’s absolute bliss. You have access to your own personal space Living on your own means that you have total access to your own space, so you’d no longer have to deal with a flatmate that harasses you and can’t respect your boundaries. You can go about your space as you please. Also, everything in your home is yours and not for the taking, so you won’t have to worry about those awful housemates that love to pinch other people’s things. Your space is yours, and that’s glorious. No more drama You won’t always see eye to eye with some of the people you live with, and that’s okay. What’s worse are the ones who create drama and cause problems for no reason and it’s not worth it. Living on your own means that you don’t have live in a tense atmosphere and you don’t have to deal with toxic people who suck the life out of you. And not having drama means that your university experience is much more likely to be a positive experience overall. Less distractions Living with people can come with certain challenges, such as noise and the pressure to go out to a club every night. Living on your own means that you don’t have to deal with unnecessary distractions and pressures, and you can stay focused on your studies and commitments. Even though living alone guarantees less distractions, not having anyone to interact with can be lonely. But it doesn’t have to be. As long as you’re not a recluse and you don’t stay in your home day in and day out, you should be able to surround yourself with good company. Hang out with friends. Join clubs and societies. Get a part-time or flexible job. Take part in volunteering activities. Get a pet if you’re tenancy allows it and you’re sure you can handle the responsibilities that come with looking after a pet. You can decorate however you want Like I said before, your space is your own, so you can decorate it how you want and add your personal touches. You won’t have to worry about someone else’s opinion or approval so add those snazzy posters, get those fancy cushions and implement your own colour coordinated theme. I would venture to say that EVERYONE has been unhappy in their career, at some point in time. Our blogs regularly touch upon the subject of finding a job that fulfills you or turning your current job into something that makes you happy. This article takes a different approach. In every situation, there are things in our control and things out of our control. We want to capitalize on those things in our control and mitigate the ones that are not in our control. Today were looking at ways you can control your mindset to improve your outlook and happiness that stems from your job or career. Focus on what you want We all have different perceptions of the world. We can perceive the world through a lens of scarcity or abundance. We can choose to focus on what we lack or what others have. Or, instead, shift the focus to what fulfills. Write down how you want to feel, what you want to achieve, what you want more of in your life! Choose your thoughts, feelings and reactions We cant control what happens to us, in many cases, but we can control our reaction to our reality. Negative influences are all around us but it’s up to you to combat those with feelings of love, gratitude and peace. It is not always easy to approach life from the lens of gratitude or peace, in fact it is not usually our go to response. However, it is good to keep in mind that we have a choice in how to respond, even if it doesnt always feel that way. See the world through your beliefs Deep inside of you is what you believe, what you need to make you whole, and what is important to you. Take a good look and be honest with your list of what is needed for you to find fulfillment in your life and career. Focusing on what you need, will help shape your actions and bring you new, positive results. Persevere and be comfortable with change Success is around the corner but it is not always easy to get there. You may need to adapt your plan, change your actions, take a new approach or a new perspective to bring about a positive career change. Change is uncomfortable but is the key to finding career happiness. Choose the right words Your mind is constantly talking to you. What is it saying? Examine the thoughts in your head and determine if they are helping or hurting. Replace negative statements with positive ones because how you describe yourself and your experiences will become your future. The responsibility is yours Now is the time to take ownership of the change you want. Identify the internal barriers that need to be shifted for you to make your career what you want it to be. Change is hard we know this. It is often a series of one step forward, two steps back or two steps forward and one step back. The key is taking the steps, both internal and external. Change takes internal work and external actions. We must start with the internal work so the external actions we take to create fulfillment in our careers and lives are in alignment, intentional and get us closer to our goals.
